«Do not play the feeling. Play the action and the circumstance.»

Who is Mona Hala?

You may have known Mona Hala as an actress long before you knew she taught acting.

Mona began acting at twelve. Since then, her work has moved across television, film and theatre, in Egypt and internationally.

01 /Screen work

Egyptian television and cinema, including The Dead Heart and Love Story, alongside comedy and drama.

The method in one line

Feeling is the natural result of meeting a real circumstance and a real partner. It is not the starting point.

02 / How she teaches

You will not hear “feel it more” and then be left to figure out what that means

Feeling is not a repeatable process. The work asks who you are, what you want, what you are doing to get it, and what the circumstances demand.

Play an action that lands

Action vs. Emotion
A general feeling✕ An abstract state (sad, angry, afraid)
A specific action✓ Visible behaviour that changes the other person

Change the action on the same lines:

To pleadObjective: Soften the other person.

In the body: Lean in, drop the armour, a warmer voice looking for contact.

Text work: what the character is doing, not only what they say

Do you actually need acting training?

You do not need another label. You need to know where your work is getting stuck.

01

You know the lines, but the scene still feels dead?

02

Every character starts looking like the last one?

03

You can produce emotion, but you do not know what you are doing to the other person?

04

The scene works at home and disappears in the audition room?

05

Directors say be natural or be sadder, and you do not know what to change?

06

You wait for your cue instead of actually listening?

07

You have taken workshops, but the tools do not belong to one process?

08

You struggle to build the character's history before this moment?

09

Your daily body and voice show up in every role?

10

A last-second note from the director throws you?

11

You rely on personal emotion instead of imagination and observation?

12

You want a professional way of working you can take into any audition?

04 / Directors

If you are a director, understanding actors is part of directing

Give me more emotion. Do less. Make it natural. Be sadder. Those are results. They do not always give an actor something playable.

01 / Directing tool

Turn notes into playable actions

Objectives and actions an actor can do on camera, not moods to imitate.

02 / Directing tool

Direct without acting the scene for them

Leave room for discovery instead of dictating every line reading.

03 / Directing tool

Name the real problem

Performance, relationship, circumstances, or the scene itself.

04 / Directing tool

Actor management on set

Mona has already taught actor-director relationship and actor management on camera.

Directing actors on camera
Directing actors on camera: a shared language between director and performer
A core directing principle

One objective = clearer behaviour

Ask for more than one objective in the same beat and the performance scatters.

«You don't need to be an actor to learn the actor's language.»

05 / What is different

You are not coming here to leave with one good scene. You are coming to build a way of working.

This is not do it like me, feel more, or rehearse one final performance until it looks polished.

Action over Emotion

Not feeling alone

Observation, imagination, action, character, body, listening. Feeling is a result.

Immediate Practice

Not theory alone

Every idea is pulled back into practice, exercises and scenes.

Repeatable Process

Not one memorised scene

You build tools you take into the next role.

Clear Progression

Clear paths

06 / Is this for you?

This workshop may be right for you if… and it may not be if…

This workshop may be right for you if

  • ✓You have instinct but want craft.
  • ✓You are already working but keep repeating the same choices.
  • ✓You have taken classes but do not have a clear process.
  • ✓You want to build a character rather than imitate one.
  • ✓You want more freedom and truth on camera.
  • ✓You are a director who wants to communicate with actors more effectively.
  • ✓Or you are starting from zero and want the foundation to be solid.

And it may not be right for you if

  • ✕You expect a casting opportunity at the end.
  • ✕You are looking for a shortcut to fame.
  • ✕You want someone to dictate every line without doing the work yourself.
  • ✕You are not prepared to rehearse, experiment, fail, adjust and prepare between sessions.

Mona is not promising to make you famous. She is offering serious space to learn the craft.

I thought my problem was that I could not produce emotion. I discovered I did not know what I was doing in the scene.
